“Smile Friday” (is that still a tumblr thing?) with Stephen Cramer! Subtitled: a current and former Athenian meet for breakfast in Brooklyn.
Stephen had to go to the airport to fly home right after this, so I sent some love and hugs for certain special people back with him.

April 21st New York show added! 8pm, Park Slope
Alright, New Yorkers… We had a great time with you all at the last two shows and we’re coming back for more. We’ve just added another show for April 21st at an amazing loft in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Here’s how it works: if you’d like to come, email your rsvp and Mr. Ryan will respond with details about how to get there. Once again, this is filling up quickly, but we’d love to see you there!
This is another evening in our Living Room series and it promises to be a great night, complete with appetizers and a cocktail menu written by Ms. Lady Lillet herself, Amanda Boccato!
Jonny Rodgers will be opening the evening again on his amazing tuned wine glasses. See you soon, NYC!

You bet I just e-mailed to RSVP for this. I asked for a +1 too, and I really hope someone will accompany me this time. Not that I didn’t have a blast talking to Katie’s cousin and his friend and befriending the musicians when I was by my lonesome last time, but it’s always nice to have a familiar face and/or shoulder to rest your head on at these kinds of things.

Weekend Update

I wish I could Facebook friend all of you so you can keep up with the goings on of my life without my having to make as much effort as it takes to update here, but I try to keep that limited to people I’ve met at least once in real life. Exceptions to the rule include Alison (inthesaddle), Katie (reallykatie), Sarah (murmurandshout), and Paul Holdengräber (…but come on now, he’s the director of LIVE from the NYPL and he actually accepted my friend request!), all of whom are people I would hang out with IRL if they lived in NYC…or if they invited me to dinner with themselves and Hans Ulrich Obrist (yes, I’m still dreaming about that one!).

Anyway, here are some quick bullet points for everyone else…

  • I have made a change to my diet that I can’t talk about here in case anyone from my family happens to find this blog, and it’s only a matter of time before that happens (if it hasn’t already). If you really want to know, message me, and I’ll tell you ALL about it!

  • My “Independent Bookstores in NYC: Past & Present” digital mapping project got accepted into Critical Themes, the annual graduate student conference hosted by the New School’s department of Media Studies, where I just got my M.A. in December. I’m a horrible public speaker, and this is my first conference presentation. I adore this project, and I want to keep working on it, but I’m terrified. I might need a Xanax next Saturday!

  • I’m really enjoying my new freelance gig, which by the way, is a social media manager position (plus assorted “other” duties that we haven’t found a title for yet) for a new socially conscious fashion start-up called Savage Senses. The co-founders are pretty happy that I know my way around the Internet in addition to actually enjoying tagging, folding, and packing inventory, so that’s great. It’s like working in retail without all the bad parts and in fashion without having to feel bad about it!

  • If you haven’t already, you should follow @alanturingreads on Twitter, even though it’s currently being neglected in favor of more pressing matters. I’m being followed by some pretty prominent Turing researchers and other academics and people of note from all over the world on that account, which is quite exciting! I got retweeted by @Radiolab a few weeks ago, for example.

  • I submitted a proposal for a portrait project for the 3rd annual Bay Ridge Storefront Artwalk, which was co-founded by my new buddy John Avelluto, who now co-owns and manages The Owl’s Head (aka the L Magazine’s Best Wine Bar in Brooklyn). I’d say I’m artsy but not an artist by any means, so I don’t actually expect to get in, but we’ll see…

  • I want to throw myself a grad school graduation party since the official ceremony is in May. If I do, I’m likely going to have Chef Michael Kogan, also a new buddy from The Owl’s Head, cater it for me. His food is absolutely delicious plus he’s a sweetheart, and I’d love to work on menu planning  with him as a treat to not only myself but also to my lovely friends and possibly some family who may come up for it.

  • Last Friday, I organized a field trip for my former professor Shannon Mattern to meet some of my former Urban Media Archaeology classmates at The Greatest Grid, an exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York about the Manhattan’s street grid, which was established by the Commissioner’s Plan of 1811, so it was the 200th Anniversary of it. This closed today, so sorry to bring it up if you didn’t get to see it, but it was pretty stellar if you’re a map geek, an urban studies geek, an American/NYC history geek, or all of the above.

In short, other than still needing to catch up on my bills after my savings finally ran out last month and having to start paying back student loans pretty soon (ugh!) and having allergies for the first time in my life just as the pollen count is on the rise (double ugh!), life’s not looking too bad for me these days. That’s a lot more than I could say until a few weeks ago, so here’s hoping the upward trend continues.

Jonny Rodgers and Faux Fix at The Whisk and Ladle Supper Club in Williamsburg, 4/1/12.

I bought CDs from both (although my MacBook rejected the Faux Fix one, so Nathan’s working on getting me a digital download code), a Faux Fix t-shirt, and I signed up for both of their mailing lists so I’ll know when these guys are next passing through NYC. Yes, they are that good, and yes, I am that much more of a fangirl after having seen them live.

Special Note: As I told Katie via email, since she’s married to a Johnson and is pretty damn talented herself, she’s covered under the provisions of my tumblr tag for the family.

Wine Glasses by Jonny Rodgers from the album: The Aviary

“Wine Glasses” by Jonny Rodgers

And below is my photo of said wine glass setup from seeing Jonny open for and play with Faux Fix last night in Williamsburg. As I wrote when I posted the photo on Facebook earlier, it was truly magical to see/hear him play these. The show was at The Whisk and Ladle Supper Club, and it was one of the best live music experiences I’ve witnessed of late.

If you get a chance to see either Jonny or Faux Fix next time they pass anywhere close to where you live, I can’t recommend going to see them enough. What a bunch of seriously sweet and talented people!

More photos, music, and possibly a mobile video or two to come!

boveda:

Two shows next week!

This was such a killer show last night. It felt as close to being at The Caledonia Lounge or some other tiny space in Athens as I’ve experienced thus far in Brooklyn. Then again, I was avoiding the local/independent music scene here from when I moved in Fall 2006 until just a couple of months ago when I got to know some people in it. Thinking about going to Glasslands on Thursday too.

I did not stay for Vulture Shit, but Lame Drivers and Eureka California were also excellent. The latter has a lady drummer named Marie who in all seriousness reminded me of a young Meg White, which is pretty fucking awesome. They are from Athens so I’ll either have to travel home to see them again or wait until they come back through Brooklyn.

An Update by Bullet Points

  • I went to the doctor on Monday to follow-up on my clear chest x-ray. He gave me an antihistamine and codeine to help me sleep and get rid of the rest of my sickness (viral not bacterial), told me to steam twice a day in the shower or just my face, keep doing my inhaler and getting lots of fluids. It’s a lot to check off the list every day, and I haven’t been able to keep up, but I’ve been trying and am feeling almost back to normal. It’s a huge relief after such a long spell of feeling like shit.
  • Otto was amazing. To be honest, I was meeting one of my brother’s friends from college for dinner, and I hadn’t seen him since the funeral in 2004 (no, I can’t believe it’ll be eight years this summer)…so when we sat down at the table, I blanked on almost everything from Jenny’s recommendations and didn’t want to be rude and look it up on my phone. In fact, as I posted on FB, I had such a great time catching up with him that I forgot to check-in on Foursquare and did not take any photos of our meal like I’ve been doing when dining alone lately. We shared the cauliflower “alla Siciliana” and white beans with soffrito to start, I had a quartino of wine and the aglio, olio, and pepperoncino pizza (that’s garlic, olive oil, and sliced red and green chilies) and a slice from my dinner companion’s pane frattau pizza (tomato, pecorino, and egg). We had the olive oil coppetta for dessert. Everything was delicious. It was a memorable meal and also really wonderful to reconnect and, essentially, make a new-old friend in the city who knows and understands a little bit of my history.
  • I finally found a new-ish neighborhood bar to make my regular drinking establishment. It’s called ba’sik, it’s on Graham Ave. one block south of Metropolitan, and it takes me five minutes to walk there from my apartment. I’ve taken a friend in with me twice, but I have been there four or five other times by myself in the last month and have made new friends from talking to almost every bartender who works there and from talking to fellow regulars. I’m at the point now where if I am passing by on my way to/from somewhere else, I pop in for five minutes to say hi even if I’m not going to stay for a drink.
  • I’m going to acupuncture every other week now. It’s sliding scale so not hurting my bank account to much, and it’s helping tremendously with making me feel better even if it’s just temporarily since the stress has been ever-present lately. I highly recommend Tim at WorkSong for anyone else in NYC who is up for trying it out. Bonus: he’s really cute and quite sweet too, so you end up looking forward to those appointments a little bit extra.
  • While I am still mentally and emotionally processing the rejection I referred to in that last post, I can confidently say that things do seem to be turning around on both the professional and personal fronts. However, if you want more details on this, you’re going to have to ask me privately.
  • On Wednesday night after acupuncture, which is in Greenpoint, I was a little hungry and wanted to treat myself, so I walked up the street and sat myself alone at the bar at Anella. This place has been on my restaurant hit list for far too long, and a quiet weeknight was the perfect way to try it out. I made friends with my bartender and talked with a couple of other people flying solo. I ate the bruschetta trio (one carrot, one fried chickpea, one anchovy - ALL delicious) while drinking a cocktail and taste testing several others and a couple of beers thanks to being there while they were trying to come up with new stuff for the menu. Yes, it was as amazing as it sounds. I had deconstructed tiramisu for dessert, which - you guessed it - was also incredible.
  • Last night, I saw Rem Koolhaas and Hans Ulrich Obrist in conversation with Paul Holdengräber at the New York Public Library. My former boss at The New School had posted about the event on Facebook, and I bought a ticket immediately after seeing it. I shared it on my timeline, and then a friend bought one too. To be honest again, I got two hours of sleep the previous night (again, ask privately if you want to know why), so I was dozing in and out the whole time. The parts I was “present” for were incredible, alternately serious and so fucking hilarious. Rem is a tough cookie and has a dry, biting sense of humor, but Paul and Hans are also so brilliant and funny in a slightly warmer way. I want to be best friends with the two of them and go to amazing dinner parties with their inner circles. I also now want to buy and devour the book they were there to discuss: Project Japan: Metabolism Talks. I’m going to do some research from the notes I wrote down and share some images and quotes with you guys when I have some time maybe over the weekend!
